The standard joist spacing for composite decking in residential applications is 16 inches on-center for perpendicular install across every major brand: Trex (Enhance, Select, Transcend, Lineage, Signature), Fiberon (GoodLife, Sanctuary, Concordia, Paramount), Deckorators (Voyage, Vault), and Eva-Last (Apex PLUS, Infinity IS, Pioneer — which spec 450mm metric, equivalent to 17.7 inches). For diagonal install at angles up to 45 degrees, every brand specifies 12 inches on-center. For stair treads and stringers, every brand specifies 12 inches on-center or tighter. Maximum board cantilever past the rim joist is 4 inches across most brands.

Joist spacing requirements differ from pressure-treated wood decking, where 24 inch on-center is sometimes acceptable for 5/4 boards. Composite decking always requires 16 inches on-center maximum for perpendicular install — the polymer matrix deflects further between supports than continuous wood fibres. Diagonal install requires 12 inch on-center because the effective unsupported span increases by a factor of 1.41 (square root of 2) when the board rotates 45 degrees. Saskatchewan Building Code follows the National Building Code with frost-depth footings to 1.2 metres / 4 feet. The City of Saskatoon caps cantilever at 25 percent of total span. Composite manufacturer spec is typically more restrictive than code on the on-center dimension. Eva-Last specifies engineer sign-off for spans above 450mm or commercial loads above 4 kPa.

The metric one. Apex PLUS, Infinity IS, and Pioneer all spec 450mm c/c for the 140mm board — TUDS frames at 16" o.c. and lands well inside spec.

Why it's different: Eva-Last writes the spec in millimetres because the company is South African and ships globally. The 140mm Apex PLUS, Infinity IS, and Pioneer profiles all carry a 450mm (~17.7 inch) maximum centre-to-centre span for residential applications. What that means for North American framers: 16 inch o.c. perpendicular, 12 inch o.c. for diagonal — same as the rest of the category. Stair treads: 12 inch o.c. or tighter, same as every other composite. Note: Eva-Last calls out separately that for spans above 450mm, ultimate load above 4 kPa, or serviceability above 2 kPa, an engineer needs to sign off — relevant if you're building a hot-tub deck or commercial application.

The 16/12/12 standard. Enhance, Select, Transcend, Lineage, and Signature all share one joist-spacing rule — 16" perpendicular, 12" diagonal, 12" stair.

The rule that built the category: Trex writes one joist-spacing spec across all five product lines for residential install — 16 inches on-center for perpendicular boards, 12 inches for any angle up to 45°, and 12 inches for stair treads. Why it's the same across tiers: the structural geometry of a Trex board doesn't change between Enhance and Signature — only the cap technology and core formulation differ. Hot-climate note: Trex recommends 12" o.c. universally in hot climates because the board expands and the tighter span keeps the surface flatter. Cantilever: max board overhang past the rim is ½ inch on most lines and 4 inches on others — check the installation guide for your specific board.

Identical spec across the line: Fiberon's GoodLife, Sanctuary, Concordia, and Paramount product guides all specify 16 inches o.c. for perpendicular install, 12 inches for any angle up to 45°, and 12 inches for stair stringer spacing. The Paramount nuance: Fiberon explicitly recommends 12" o.c. on Paramount and Promenade for a more rigid feel, even though the board is approved for 16". Deckorators

The mineral-based one. Voyage and Vault MBC boards spec 16" perpendicular and 12" diagonal — but the core handles freeze-thaw differently than wood-fiber composite.

Same headline rule, different physics: Deckorators Voyage and Vault use Mineral-Based Composite (MBC) cores instead of wood-fiber. Joist spacing per the official Eovations install guide is 16 inches o.c. perpendicular, 12 inches diagonal at angles up to 45°, and 12 inches for stair tread support. Why MBC matters for Prairie framers: the mineral core absorbs less moisture than wood-fiber composite, which means less seasonal expansion across the board's length — relevant when your shop pressure-treated framing moves a half-percent in dimension between January and July, but the boards on top don't. Cantilever: 4 inches max board overhang.

"Can I just frame at 24" o.c. like wood decks?"

No — and your inspector won't sign it off either. Pressure-treated 5/4 boards can sit on 24" o.c. because the wood fibres run continuously down the length of the board. Composite boards rely on a polymer matrix that deflects further between supports under the same load. Every major composite brand (Trex, Eva-Last, Fiberon, Deckorators) caps perpendicular install at 16" o.c. for residential. Frame at 24" and you'll feel the bounce on day one — and the warranty walks because you're outside the install spec.

Geometry. When a board runs perpendicular to the joists, the unsupported span between joists is exactly the joist o.c. — 16 inches. Spin the same board 45° and the actual unsupported length increases by a factor of √2 (about 1.41×), so a 16" o.c. joist field becomes a 22.6" effective span under the diagonal board. That's outside every composite brand's load spec. Tightening to 12" o.c. brings the diagonal effective span back to ~17" — comfortably inside the 16" baseline. Same reason every brand caps stair treads at 12" — the load model is different.

Yes — if the boards are running perpendicular to the joists and the framing is structurally sound. 16" o.c. is the universal composite-decking baseline for perpendicular install. Three things to check first: (1) joists straight and crowned the same direction; (2) no rot or insect damage in the existing PT — re-deck on a frame you trust; (3) tape the top of every joist with G-Tape before laying boards, so the screw holes don't telegraph water into the wood. If you want to go diagonal on the new boards, you'll need to add sister joists to bring spacing down to 12" o.c. before you start.

For diagonal install at angles up to 45°, every brand drops to 12 inches o.c.

No. 24" o.c. is acceptable for some pressure-treated 5/4 wood decking but exceeds the maximum span for every major composite brand. Composite boards rely on a polymer matrix that deflects further between supports than continuous wood fibres do — at 24" o.c. you'll feel a noticeable bounce, and the manufacturer's warranty becomes void because you're outside the install spec. The maximum is 16" o.c. perpendicular for residential applications across Trex, Fiberon, Deckorators, and Eva-Last.

Some installations go as tight as 9" o.c. for a more rigid feel underfoot. Stair treads see concentrated point loads (a foot landing on a single board) that demand tighter support than a main deck field. Stair tread overhang is typically capped at 3/4 inch past the riser.

The City of Saskatoon caps cantilever at 25% of the total span. A 12-foot back span allows up to 3 feet of cantilever for code, but typical residential builds keep it to 16-24 inches.

That converts to roughly 17.7 inches, which means North American framers using imperial 16" o.c. lumber stay comfortably inside Eva-Last spec. Trex writes 16 inch o.c. flat across all five lines. The functional rule for both brands is the same — frame at 16" o.c. perpendicular and you're inside spec. Eva-Last's metric spec gives the same answer as Trex's imperial spec.

Saskatchewan follows the National Building Code with provincial amendments. For residential decks: joist spacing is governed by joist size + species + span, not a fixed o.c. rule. A 2x8 SPF joist at 16" o.c. typically spans up to 12 feet between supports; at 12" o.c. up to 13–14 feet. The City of Saskatoon also requires footings to extend below 1.2 metre / 4 foot frost line, and caps cantilever at 25% of total span. Composite manufacturer spec (16" perpendicular / 12" diagonal / 12" stair) is more restrictive than code on the o.c. dimension — your frame has to satisfy both.
