Authorized Fortress Evolution dealer

Fortress Evolution steel framing. Build it once, forget about it. Forever.

Your composite boards are warrantied for half a century. The wood frame under them isn't. Evolution's 16-gauge pre-galvanized steel joists carry a 25-year structural warranty, cut with the same saw as lumber, frame the same spacing, and qualify for Class A fire-rated builds — without asking you to learn a new trade. Stocked at both TUDS Prairie yards.

The Evolution system

Joist. Beam. S-Ledger. One steel system.

Evolution isn't a tier hierarchy — it's an integrated steel framing system. Every component is engineered to work together: 16-gauge joists, 14-gauge structural beams, and the pre-punched S-Ledger backbone that ties it all to the house.

16-Gauge Joist

Cold-formed 2x6 joist. Outspans SPF lumber. Doesn't rot, twist, or shrink — ever.

The 16-gauge 2x6 joist is the workhorse of the Evolution system. Cold-formed steel with the same nominal dimensions as a 2x6 wood joist — but with structural span capability that outperforms SPF in most residential configurations at 16-inch on-centre spacing. Available in 12', 14', 16', 18', and 20' lengths. The Black Sand Multi-stage coating coating is a four-layer system: pre-galvanization, nano-pretreatment, e-coat, and powder top coat. Cut ends get treated with Black Sand touch-up spray before install. The result: a joist that doesn't move seasonally, doesn't pop screws as boards expand and contract, and doesn't pit out at the frost line in Saskatchewan clay soil.

“If you're putting Trex Transcend or Eva-Last Apex PLUS on top — twenty-five-year boards — frame it with twenty-five-year joists. I've watched too many SPF frames start moving at year eight while the composite boards are still mint. The math works the moment you do the rebuild calculation honestly.”

Fortress Evolution 14-gauge 2x11 structural steel beam — load-bearing outer member equivalent to a triple 2x10 glulam, stocked at TUDS Saskatoon and Regina
Beam Tier
Load-bearing

2x11 Structural Beam

Load-equivalent to a triple 2x10 glulam. Lower weight. Same span, less post.

The 14-gauge 2x11 structural beam carries the load on the outer support line of an Evolution build. Load-equivalent to a triple 2x10 glulam at meaningfully lower weight, which means longer clear spans between posts on the same load case — fewer footings, fewer holes in the yard. Available in 8', 12', 16', and 20' lengths. Pairs with the Single and Double Beam/Post Brackets at the post-to-beam connection. For elevated decks or longer cantilever sections, this is the spec that earns its price.

“I had a customer last spring who saved two pile-and-bracket sets on his deck plan because the Evolution beam let him skip a post. That alone covered a chunk of the steel premium. The longer clear span isn't a nice-to-have — on tricky lots it's the whole reason you'd choose steel.”

Fortress Evolution S-Ledger steel deck ledger system — pre-punched for 12 or 16-inch on-centre joist spacing, the structural backbone of every Evolution build

S-Ledger System

The structural backbone. Pre-punched for 12" or 16" on-centre — install layout, eliminated.

The S-Ledger is what separates an Evolution build from any other steel-framed deck system. It's the ledger member that ties the framing to the house, and it ships with factory-punched holes for either 12-inch or 16-inch on-centre joist spacing — which means the layout-marking step disappears entirely. Available in 12' and 20' lengths, in blank (no punching) or pre-punched configuration. The S-Ledger is the single most-stocked structural member at TUDS — 108 units across all variants between Saskatoon and Regina. Pairs with the Ledger Bracket (338 in stock) for the joist-to-ledger connection.

“The pre-punched on-centre spacing is the feature most people don't appreciate until their second deck. You skip the entire layout step. The first time you frame an Evolution deck the speed is genuinely surprising — and it's not faster because you're cutting corners, it's faster because the engineering is done at the factory.”

Three honest questions about steel framing — and what we'd actually say.

"Why steel framing instead of pressure-treated wood?"
Shane · Co-owner
Shane · Co-owner

Honest answer: because the framing under a composite deck shouldn't have a shorter lifespan than the boards on top of it. If you're putting Trex Transcend or Eva-Last Apex PLUS on the surface — boards rated for 25 to 50 years — and you frame it with SPF lumber, you're guaranteed to rebuild the substructure once during the life of the boards. That rebuild typically costs more than the Evolution premium would have. The math works on any deck the homeowner plans to keep more than ten years.

"What about Saskatchewan winters and the freeze-thaw cycle?"
Wade · Co-owner
Wade · Co-owner

Steel doesn't absorb moisture, so it doesn't expand in the spring or contract in the dry winter. That's the freeze-thaw story in one sentence. The Multi-stage coating coating is the corrosion story — four layers, designed specifically against the kind of frost-line moisture exposure that pits uncoated galvanized joist hangers in our clay soils. We pair Evolution framing with helical piles or properly-sleeved concrete piers and the foundation-to-frame connection stays dimensionally stable for decades. That's what you want under a composite deck in this climate.

Read: helical piles vs concrete footings
"Honestly — what does it cost compared to wood framing?"
Shane · Co-owner
Shane · Co-owner

Straight answer: roughly 5–8x the raw material cost of SPF lumber. On a typical 400 sq ft Prairie deck, expect $3,000–$6,000 more in framing materials versus treated wood. That's a real number and we'll tell you that directly. The total-cost-of-ownership argument is solid — one SPF rebuild at year twelve costs more than the steel premium would have — but if your current build budget can't support steel framing, that's a real constraint and we'll spec quality treated lumber and the right hardware to give you the best wood-framed deck possible. The right answer is the one that fits the customer's situation, not the most expensive one.

Yes — TUDS is an authorized Fortress Evolution dealer with steel framing in stock at both our Saskatoon and Regina stores. S-Ledger, 16-gauge joists, 14-gauge structural beams, rim joists, stair components, and most hardware brackets are stocked between the two yards. We ship LTL freight anywhere in Canada — call either store for a freight quote on your specific address. Hardware (brackets, blocking, screws) ships standard parcel on most orders.

Honestly: Evolution steel framing runs roughly 5–8x the raw material cost of SPF lumber for a comparable deck. A typical 400 sq ft Prairie deck is approximately $3,000–$6,000 more in framing materials with Evolution versus treated wood. That's a real number and we'll tell you directly. The total-cost-of-ownership argument is solid — one SPF rebuild at year twelve usually exceeds the steel premium — but if your current build budget can't fit steel framing, we'll help you spec quality treated lumber and the right hardware. Use the estimator for a real number on your specific deck.

No. The Multi-stage coating coating is a four-layer system specifically engineered for the kind of frost-line moisture exposure Prairie soils produce: pre-galvanization base, nano-pretreatment, e-coat, and Black Sand powder top coat. Versus uncoated galvanized (which pits at frost-line depth in clay soils) and versus single-layer painted finishes, Multi-stage coating is the right spec for our climate. Important install note: every cut end on Evolution framing needs Black Sand touch-up spray applied before installation. Factory edges are coated; cut ends expose bare steel. Touch-up spray is stocked at both TUDS yards.

Fortress Evolution carries a 25-year limited structural warranty. "Limited" means specific exclusions apply — typically: improper installation, non-standard environmental conditions, and damage from causes outside normal residential use. The warranty is administered by Fortress Building Products. TUDS does not file warranty claims on your behalf, but we'll help you understand what documentation Fortress requires and point you at the right starting place if you need to start a claim. See Fortress Building Products for the full warranty terms.

Yes — the framing system is brand-agnostic. TUDS regularly pairs Evolution with Trex Transcend and Signature, Eva-Last Apex PLUS and Pioneer, Fiberon Sanctuary, and Deckorators Voyage. The dimensional stability of steel is particularly valuable under composite and PVC boards, where the surface is rated for 25–30 years and you want the substructure to match. Verify the on-centre spacing on the S-Ledger (12" or 16") matches your decking manufacturer's joist-spacing requirement before ordering.

If you have framing experience, yes. The install logic is the same as wood — ledger, joists, rim joist, beam, posts — using self-tapping steel screws and F50 brackets instead of nails and joist hangers. The pre-punched S-Ledger eliminates the layout-marking step. For elevated decks (over 600mm above grade in most Canadian municipalities), you'll need a building permit — which references span tables and may require an Engineering Express Technical Evaluation Report. Experienced DIYers handle it; first-time deck builders should consider working with a framer for the structural members. Bring your plans into either store and we'll walk through what your project needs.

Evolution carries an Intertek Code Compliance Research Report (CCRR) confirming structural performance against IBC and IRC standards, and a Class A fire rating (NFPA). For Canadian permit submissions, Engineering Express provides Technical Evaluation Reports specifically for Canadian Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) submissions — these are the span-table and structural documents your inspector will typically ask for. CCMC listing status varies — call either store and we'll provide the current documentation package for your municipality.

Joists, structural beams, S-Ledgers, and rim joists are LTL (less-than-truckload) freight items because of their length — they cannot ship via standard parcel. Shipping is calculated at checkout based on your delivery address and order size; there is no free shipping on LTL or oversized items. Hardware SKUs (brackets, blocking, screws) ship standard parcel on most orders. Local pickup at either Saskatoon or Regina avoids LTL freight entirely and lets you spec the project on-site with our build team.
