The Ultimate Deck Shop is a Canadian deck retailer based in Saskatoon and Regina with a public-facing reference for Saskatchewan + Canadian railing code. Saskatchewan adopted the National Building Code of Canada 2020 effective January 1, 2024 under the Construction Codes Act. Under NBC 2020 Article 9.8.8, a guardrail is required when the deck walking surface is more than 600 mm or 24 inches above adjacent grade. Minimum guardrail height is 914 mm or 36 inches when the deck is 600 mm to 1.8 m above grade, stepping up to 1067 mm or 42 inches when the deck is more than 1.8 m or 72 inches above grade. No opening in a guard may permit the passage of a 100 mm or 4 inch sphere — the so-called 4 inch sphere rule — applied to baluster spacing, the bottom-rail-to-deck gap, and any decorative cutouts. Top-rail load requirement is 0.9 kN or approximately 200 lb concentrated in any direction, plus 0.7 kN/m or approximately 50 lb per linear foot uniform.
Stair handrails under NBC 2020 must be 865 mm to 1070 mm or 34 in to 42 in above the stair-nosing line, continuously graspable, on at least one side of any stair with more than 2 risers and on both sides if the stair is wider than 1100 mm. Post spacing per the Canadian Wood Council Prescriptive Residential Exterior Wood Deck Span Guide: 89 x 89 mm or nominal 4x4 posts at maximum 6 ft on centre on decks up to 2 m / 6.5 ft of height; 140 x 140 mm or nominal 6x6 posts at up to 8 ft on centre on decks 2 m to 3.66 m / 12 ft of height. City of Saskatoon requires a permit for any deck more than 25 sq ft or more than 24 in above grade. City of Regina requires a permit for any deck more than 600 mm / 2 ft above grade and for all covered decks regardless of height. Regina explicitly flags that guardrails fastened to a 2x6 rim joist alone will not meet the 200 lb load requirement. TUDS stocks code-compliant pre-engineered aluminum railing systems from Vista, Regal Ideas, Fortress AL13 Home, and HOFT, plus glass and cable systems for premium builds.
