How we got here

    TUDS opens in Saskatoon

    One yard, one truck, one stack of composite samples. Shane and Wade open the doors with a simple thesis: Saskatchewan homeowners deserve a real deck shop, not a hardware aisle. The first showroom is small but the lineup is honest — every brand worth carrying, every tier on the wall.

    Eva-Last partnership + four-brand authorization [VERIFY year]

    We become an authorized Eva-Last dealer alongside Trex, Fiberon, and Deckorators — making TUDS one of the only places in Canada where you can sample all four major composite lineups under one roof. The Apex PLUS and Pioneer lines arrive at the showroom and customer questions immediately get more interesting.

    Working contractors had been quietly running half their material through TUDS for years. We formalize it — TUDS PRO gives builders trade pricing, dedicated reps, take-off support, and showroom-as-sales-tool access. The program now powers deck builds across SK + into Alberta and Manitoba.

Why we exist

Backyards are the unsung great rooms of Canadian homes. We exist to make them the place people most want to be.

The first weekend of May. Coffee on the deck, not inside. The night the kids invent a new game with a hose and a flashlight. The week of August where you forget what day it is because the backyard has been so good. That is what we're helping you get to. Not boards. Not screws. Not warranty PDFs. The escape.

We started TUDS because we kept watching homeowners get talked into the wrong deck — by big-box stores who don't know the difference between Apex PLUS and Trex Transcend, by contractors who only sell what they always have, by online checkouts where nobody warns you that the cheap fastener is going to bleed rust through your $9,000 boards. Saskatchewan deserved better. We built it.

What makes us different

Most Canadian deck shops carry one or two brands and pretend the others don't exist. We carry every brand worth carrying — Eva-Last, Trex, Fiberon, Deckorators on composite; Vista, Regal Ideas, AL13 Home on aluminum railing; full hardscape, fasteners, stains, lighting, pergolas, fences. If a brand isn't on our shelf, it's because we tested it and didn't believe in it.

You can walk into either yard and see all of it at full scale. You can lay a Pioneer board against your siding swatch. You can stand on the Apex PLUS to feel the grip. You can hold the Trex Transcend Tropical against the Eva-Last Brazilian Teak and decide for yourself. That is what bricks-and-mortar is supposed to do. And both owners — Shane and Wade — are still on the floor most days. You will probably meet one of us before you check out.

Where we are

Saskatoon (320 68th Street East) and Regina (141 4th Avenue East). Real bricks-and-mortar — not a virtual storefront.

We are a Saskatchewan company. Two real showrooms, both staffed seven days a week most of the season, both with full sample walls and the same Escape Artists across the floor. Saskatoon opened in 2016. Regina followed a few years later. The two yards run as one company — same pricing, same lineup, same warranty support — so a Regina customer can grab from Saskatoon stock if a colour is short, and vice versa.

We deliver across Saskatchewan, into Alberta and Manitoba via LTL freight, and ship across the rest of Canada when customers in BC, Ontario, or the Maritimes can't find Eva-Last or any of our other lines locally. We are not an online-only operation pretending to have a showroom. We are a showroom-first operation that happens to ship.

Who we serve

Homeowners DIYing. Contractors stocking trucks. Designers speccing. Anyone planning a backyard escape.

About half our customers are homeowners building their first or second deck — usually nervous, often comparing five brands, almost always benefiting from a 30-minute showroom walk. We've built the Full DIY and Assisted DIY lanes for these folks: the second is for when you want a build plan, material list, and an Escape Artist on call without paying for an installer.

The other half is contractors and designers. Working builders run trade volume through the TUDS PRO program — trade pricing, dedicated rep, take-off support, will-call from either yard. Designers and architects spec us into projects across SK because we keep the boards on the wall instead of in a binder. And when the homeowner hires the contractor: we make the handoff clean — same SKU, same pricing, no confusion.

What's next

The next chapters of TUDS are already underway. Managed Install is scaling — coordinating vetted third-party installers so customers don't have to chase contractors. Hardscape, fences, pergolas, and lighting are growing categories on both showroom floors. The TUDS PRO contractor program is adding bench depth. The TUDS-X expo brings vendors and builders into the yard for hands-on demos. The Deckheads Podcast and TUDS YouTube channel keep adding episodes.

Through all of it, the thesis from 2016 holds: be the deck shop we wished had existed. Every expansion answers the question 'what's making it harder for our customer to get to the version of summer they're picturing?' If a service or category answers that, we add it. If not, we don't.

He started the company in 2016 with a thesis nobody else in Saskatchewan was running with: a real deck shop, multi-brand, sample-able, owned and run by people who'd actually built things. A decade in, he's still the guy you'll most likely run into on the Saskatoon floor on a Saturday — usually walking a customer through Apex PLUS vs Pioneer, or talking a contractor out of a fastener choice that'll bleed rust.

TUDS — The Ultimate Deck Shop — is co-owned by Shane Chapman (Co-founder + President) and Wade Laurent (Co-founder). It is privately held, Canadian-owned, and based in Saskatchewan. Not a franchise, not a chain, not part of a bigger holdco.

Because that's the whole point. Customers don't come to TUDS to buy boards — they come because they're picturing a version of summer where the deck is done, the coffee is on the rail, and the kids are inventing a new game with a hose. The boards are the means. The escape is the end. Once we said it out loud, every part of the company started organizing around it: salespeople became Escape Artists, the showrooms became where you plan your escape, the website opens with the same line.

Because decks are a high-stakes purchase that most customers will only make once or twice in their lives — and the difference between the right composite and the wrong one is huge in Prairie climate. Big-box stores don't carry the right brands and don't train staff on cap technology, board profiles, or warranty details. Generic landscape supply doesn't carry the depth. We exist in the gap.
