Cortex now comes with the following product enhancements:

  • TORX Drive System: This system is almost impossible to strip-out. In addition, the stability button keeps the fastener straight through installation.
  • Modified Fastener: New thread design reduces installation torque and dramatically increases fastener strength. Length moves from 2 ½”.
  • Stronger Setting Tool: Optimized for extreme pro contractor use. Stronger bit material and industrial grade felt will enable you to install 350 fasteners on one Cortex Setting Tool.

Disappointing performance

I have tried the Cortex deck screw for the first time and I've been disappointed by the weakness of its Torx head.

I was able to compare this product with the screws made by Starborn which have a wider collar around the point of bit insertion. Whenever you hit an obstacle like a hidden screw, the head of the Cortex screw immediately slips, wearing out the indentation and making it very difficult to extract the screw afterwards. I found the Starborn screw is more robust as its head remains intact after hitting an obstacle. I think those Cortex screws should be made with a Robertson type hole or be made with a denser metal.

This is great feedback, thank you! We have actually switched to stocking the Starborn Pro Plug variety, so I'm happy to hear those work better in your experience.

The Cortex actually did used to be a Robertson head and a slightly different threading. But the Torx actually works much nicer than the Robertson. Not without it's own nuances though as you've pointed out.
