G-Tape 3040BK has been tested through accelerated aging equivalent to 50 years and retains over 60% of original adhesion plus over 100% of original tensile strength. Once it's under your decking boards (out of UV), expect it to outlast the deck itself. UV exposure tolerance during the install window is 300 days — you don't have to board over the same day, the joist can sit framed all summer.

Acrylic (G-Tape) is what you want for Prairie decks. Acrylic holds adhesion across -20°F to +200°F without softening, doesn't ooze in summer sun, and bonds to dry SPF lumber without primer thanks to AAMA 711-13 Level 3 rating. Butyl tapes are cheaper but soften and can migrate at the temperatures Saskatchewan decks hit in July. Butyl also typically needs a primer on rough lumber. For an attic, basement, or garage application, butyl is fine. For a deck top in a Prairie summer, acrylic is the right call.

Service temperature is -20°F (-29°C) once installed. Application sweet spot is +14°F (-10°C) and above — the acrylic needs the wood surface dry and the air warm enough for the adhesive to flow into the wood grain. In Prairie shoulder season (October, March-April), aim for sunny afternoons with dry lumber. If the wood is frosty or damp, warm it with a propane heat lamp for an hour first, or wait. Once it's stuck and warmed up once, it stays stuck for the full service-temperature range.

No. Acrylic adhesives need a clean, dry, dust-free surface to bond properly. Pressure-treated lumber that's still drying out from the mill (KDAT not used, or recently delivered) needs to sit and lose surface moisture before taping. SPF / Douglas fir is usually fine if it's been on-site a few days. Wipe joists clean before peel-and-stick — sawdust between the tape and the wood is the #1 reason for poor adhesion.

For single 2x joist tops (1.5" actual width): 2" tape — covers the joist top with a 1/4" overhang each side. For doubled 2x beams (3" actual): 4" tape. For laminated beams or rim joists you want fully wrapped: 6" or 9" tape. For ledgers being protected as part of a flashing detail: 9" or 12" tape.
