RainEscape Troughs

The U-shaped membrane that runs joist-to-joist. This is the main consumable — most of your order count.

Troughs are the engine of the system: a UV-stabilized membrane shaped to run between the joists with a slight V down the centre, channelling water toward the downspouts. Sized by your joist spacing — 16" O.C. is the most common Prairie residential spec. Available in 12-foot and 16-foot lengths to match your joist runs. Stapled along the joist tops, then over-taped with butyl so the staples themselves never leak.

RainEscape Downspouts

Where the troughs end. Each downspout drains the troughs on either side into a standard gutter run.

Downspouts are the funnel: 10-inch tall outlets that sit between the joists at the low end of each trough run, fit cleanly into a 2x10 joist bay, and drop water into a conventional rain gutter you tie to your existing downspout pipe. One downspout typically drains two troughs (one trough sloped from each direction). Works with 12" or 16" joist spacing — the rest of the system stays the same.

Butyl Joist Tape

Self-adhered butyl flashing that goes over the trough staples. This is what makes the system actually waterproof.

Butyl Tape (4" × 50' roll) is the layer that turns staples into a sealed system. After you staple the troughs to the joist tops, the tape covers every staple and every seam — the butyl self-heals around fasteners so water can't track in along the screw threads later. One 50-foot roll covers approximately 50 sq ft of deck on 16" O.C. spacing. Plan for one roll per 50 sq ft of deck plus a margin for ledger and end-cap runs.

The detail sealant. Tubes go around penetrations, downspout transitions, and any seam the tape can't fully wrap.

Butyl Caulk handles the geometry the tape can't follow — corners, downspout transitions, ledger penetrations, and any spot where two trough sections overlap. It's the same butyl chemistry as the tape, just in a tube. Order one or two tubes for an average residential install; more if your deck has a lot of stairs, posts, or angled cuts. Skip nothing here — the warranty looks at the install as a complete system.

Where the system meets the house. Flashes the ledger-board transition so water never tracks behind the deck.

Wall Tape handles the most failure-prone joint in any deck: the ledger-to-house transition. The trough at the house side terminates against the ledger, and Wall Tape bridges that transition up the house wall, integrating with whatever housewrap or flashing system is already there. This is the difference between a dry under-deck and a wet basement wall — and the warranty expects it on the install.

Yes. RainEscape is brand-agnostic — it sits between the joists and the deck boards, so it doesn't care what brand of board you put on top. Works with composite, PVC, hardwood, pressure-treated. We've installed it under Eva-Last, Trex Transcend, Fiberon, and Deckorators. The only constraint is joist spacing — 12" or 16" O.C.

Yes, but the boards have to come up. RainEscape installs from the top down — staple the troughs to the joist tops, butyl-tape over, then re-board. So the practical retrofit moment is when you're refinishing or replacing the deck surface anyway. If you're stripping a wood deck for refinish or swapping pressure-treated to composite, that's the right moment to add drainage. Boards staying down? RainEscape isn't the system — under-deck ceiling panels are.

The membrane is UV-stabilized and rated for the temperature swings we get on the Prairies. Snow load is carried by the joists and boards above — the troughs only see meltwater. The bigger consideration is making sure your downspout exits clear of snow buildup and ice damming, which is a placement question we'll work through with you in the showroom from your deck sketch. We've had RainEscape installed on Saskatoon and Regina decks for years with no membrane failure claims.

Yes — RainEscape is brand-agnostic. The system sits between your joists and your deck boards, so the boards on top can be any brand or material: Eva-Last, Trex, Fiberon, Deckorators, hardwood, or pressure-treated. The only constraint is joist spacing (12" or 16" O.C.) and that the boards have to be off during install.

Two: 12" on-centre and 16" on-centre. The downspout fits a 2x10 joist bay at either spacing. 24" O.C. exceeds the design envelope — for 24" spacing you'd need an under-deck ceiling system like ZipUp instead, which works differently (panels below the joists rather than membranes above).

It can, with extra detailing. Cantilevers introduce edge conditions the standard install guide doesn't cover, but most cantilever scenarios are workable — the trough run terminates at the cantilever edge, with butyl tape and a drip detail. Bring a sketch and we'll work out the part list together at either showroom.

Trex owns the warranty claim process; if a TUDS customer needs to start a claim, call either store and we'll walk you through the documentation.

Yes — troughs (16" O.C., both 12 ft and 16 ft lengths), downspouts, butyl tape (4" × 50' rolls), butyl caulk, and wall tape are all stocked at our Saskatoon and Regina yards. Most Prairie residential builds ship the same week. Larger orders (multi-deck builds, commercial) call ahead so we can stage inventory.
