Both work, with trade-offs. Concrete pavers (Techo-Bloc, Belgard, Barkman) are engineered for freeze-thaw to ASTM C-936 standards — predictable performance, consistent dimensions, every piece fits the next. They're the workhorse of the Prairie market for that reason. Natural stone (flagstone, limestone, granite) has the patina + character of real rock but variable thickness, irregular edges, and heavier installation labour — and not every type handles -40 + de-icing salt without spalling. For most Saskatchewan patios we recommend concrete pavers for the structural performance, plus a flagstone-look concrete (Belgard Mega-Arbel, Techo-Bloc Mista) if you want the natural-stone read with engineered freeze-thaw rating.

Retaining wall = engineered concrete block system (Techo-Bloc Brandon/Raffinato, Barkman Keystone, Belgard wall units) designed to hold back soil. Modular, structural, freeze-thaw rated, double-sided, with cap pieces. Use it any time you're holding more than ~600mm (2') of soil or you need a wall that lives 30+ years. Sleeper wall = pressure-treated timber sleepers (railway-tie style) stacked and pinned. Cheaper and faster but rots from the inside out in 10–15 years on the Prairies and won't hold significant soil load. For anything you'll regret rebuilding — any structural or visible wall — use a concrete block system. Sleepers belong in raised garden beds and temporary borders.
