When this is the right answer: ground-level decks (no usable space below), low-clearance decks (under 4 ft, can't stand up under there anyway), and any deck where you genuinely don't care about the space underneath. Hidden cost: over time, water consistently hitting the joist tops accelerates rot on pressure-treated framing. Drainage protects framing as much as it expands usable space. Honest take: if your deck is two feet off the ground, skip drainage. If it's seven feet up with a walkout door, drainage almost always pays back.

Depends what you're willing to pull apart. Above-joist (Dexerdry) and below-joist trough (RainEscape) both require the boards to come off — they install from the top down, so you need access to the joist tops. The natural retrofit moment is when you're refinishing or replacing the surface boards anyway. If the boards have to stay down, the only retrofit option is a below-joist ceiling system that fastens to the joist undersides — costs more ($12–$20 per sq ft), but doesn't require disturbing the deck above. Dexerdry ($9–$14 per sq ft) is the strongest above-joist alternative, with the cleanest aesthetic from below. Aluminum ceiling systems like ZipUp ($12–$20 per sq ft) are the right answer when you want the under-deck space to feel like a finished room. All three are Prairie freeze-thaw rated.

Above-joist (Dexerdry) installs between the deck boards in one pass, with a thin transparent flange visible between every board pair from above. Best for new builds where you want drainage handled in the same install as the decking, and decks where you want the joists visible-but-clean from below. Requires 1/8" per foot pitch.
